Viivi Rintanen Hulluussarjakuvia - Sarjakuvaterapiaa 2020

Hulluussarjakuvia – or Comics about Madness is an inclusive, non-profit project where people send the creator (which is me, Viivi) real-life stories of madness. I script the stories with the storytellers and draw them into webcomics.

Hulluussarjakuvia is a Finnish comics blog about mental illness by us, the crazy people. Or the mentally ill, nuts, mad or the basket cases – you name it. In other places you might insult us with the namecalling, but not here. ”Mad” or ”madness” is a descriptive definition here. Even the solid truth and an identity for many of us.

My first graphic novel is based on the time I worked in a mental ward as a cleaner for three summers.  After seeing the people there I finally took a hard, compassioned look at myself. I was crazy too, a 20-something woman plagued with an eating disorder. If they were lovable human beings, wasn’t I too?

After that I commited of drawing about us crazies as long as the Finnish word for crazy, ”hullu”, was no longer an insult. There is still a long way to go: in Finland we are seen lacking something, failured or even dangerous. Madness is a taboo.

This is a place for real-life stories of our crazy lifes. We are the voices that are not usually listened to paradoxically because we are crazy. Therefore there has been an abundance on medical, political and discriminatory talk about us for centuries. Now we are here to fill in the blanks the experts have not yet realized are also very important: experience, honesty and mutual listening.

In Hulluussarjakuvia we show you how it feels to be crazy and give each other support. On the other hand we give you knowledge and experiences in the form of comics to fight the fearful prejudice or incorrect assumptions of us. Many of us discriminate ourselves and hide the mental difficulties we live in. That is one of the reasons Finland is still one of the top countries of suicide in Europe.

I will provide translations here little by little. Maybe an English domain shall see the light of day in the future. 🙂 If the stories resonate in you and you support our message, feel free to tell yours to me via email: hulluussarjakuvia@gmail.com.
